3. Assigning Roles
Magento 2 also allows you to assign roles to each image. There are three roles you can assign – base, small, and thumbnail.
The base image is the main product image that will be displayed on the product page. The small image is a smaller version of the base image that can be used in the product listing page. The thumbnail image is a tiny version of the base image that is displayed in the shopping cart and checkout pages.
To assign a role, simply hover over the image and click on the gear icon. Then, select the role you want to assign to the image.
Image Optimization
Optimizing images is crucial for improving website performance. Fortunately, Magento 2 provides some built-in image optimization features.

Magento 2 offers automatic image compression to reduce image size without affecting quality. This feature is enabled by default and can be configured in the Stores > Configuration > Advanced > System > Full Page Cache section.
2. Lazy Loading
Lazy loading is a technique that delays the loading of images until they are needed. This can improve website performance by reducing the initial page load time. Magento 2 provides an option to enable lazy loading for images. To enable lazy loading, go to Stores > Configuration > Advanced > System > Images Settings and select the Enable Lazy Loading option.
